The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a concrete pad at the side or rear, and houses the compressor and condenser coil. Inside, the air handler or furnace with its evaporator coil mounts in a utility closet, attic, or basement and is the piece that conditions the air before it moves through the house.

The thermostat goes on an interior wall where it reads the living space and tells the rest of the system when to run. A refrigerant line set connects the indoor and outdoor units, running through a small penetration in the wall, and a condensate drain line carries moisture away from the evaporator coil to a floor drain or exterior.
