The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a concrete pad at ground level, and houses the compressor and condenser coil. Inside, the air handler holds the evaporator coil and the blower that moves conditioned air through the house. These two units are the core of what a contractor installs.

The thermostat mounts on an interior wall and gives the homeowner control over the system. A refrigerant line set runs between the outdoor and indoor units, and a condensate drain line carries moisture away from the air handler to a suitable discharge point.
