The outdoor condenser unit sits on a concrete pad beside the house and holds the compressor and condenser coil, which are the heart of the system. Inside, the air handler mounts in a utility closet, attic, or garage and moves conditioned air through the home. These are the two main pieces a contractor places and connects.

The expansion valve and evaporator coil live inside or directly attached to the air handler, and together they are where the cooling actually happens within that cabinet. A thermostat goes on an interior wall and gives the homeowner control over the whole system.
