The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a concrete pad at grade level, and it is where heat gets expelled from the home. Inside, the air handler or furnace cabinet stands in a utility space, basement, or closet and holds the evaporator coil that does the indoor work. These are the two main pieces a contractor brings in and sets in place.

The thermostat goes on an interior wall where it reads the air temperature and tells the system when to run. Refrigerant line sets run between the indoor and outdoor units, and a condensate drain line carries moisture out of the air handler to a floor drain or outside the structure.
